The Longest Name in cricket history by Gerry Vaidyasekera One of the Commentators covering the ALFAIAH Cup Triangular Cricket International Tournament in Sri Lanka is the Indian spinner, L. Sivaramakrishnan, who represented India in nine Tests. He played against Sri Lanka in the Second Test at Sara Stadium in 1985-86. He was caught by S. Wettimuny off R. J. Ratnayake for 18 in the first innings, and caught by Amil Silva, behind the stumps for 21 in the second innings. He bowled 31 overs to give away 90 runs without capturing a wicket in the first innings and seven overs to give away 27 runs again without a wicket in the second innings. He left his mark in Test cricket as the longest name of a Test player. Sacred to the memory of three Hindu Gods, his name has 17 letters. The second place is taken by Kapila Wijegunawardene with 15 letters. Kapila played in two Tests for Sri Lanka, one against England and the other against Pakistan. Touring Pakistan in 1991-92, Kapila took 3 for 47 and 4 for 51 sending down 48.2 overs in the Test. He dismissed Imran Khan, Pakistan's skipper, bowled in the first innings and lbw in the second. His other victims included Javeed Miandad, Salim Malik and Wasim Akram. His long run up in the tour of England in 1991, did not help him to increase his speed nor strike a length. |
