by Asanga Warnakulasuriya A son of a billionaire businessman in Kandy area along with another suspect was taken into custody yesterday by the Kandy Division Crime Investigations Bureau (DCIB) for allegedly maintaining an arms cache in Wewelathenna in Ududumbara, Kandy. Among the weapons taken into custody were one rifle, two double barrel guns, two shot guns and a Czech made 0.22mm pistol, SI Ananda Herath of Kandy DCIB told the Daily News yesterday. The Police who also took over 10,000 rounds of ammunition. The weapons are estimated to be worth over Rs.800,000. The arrest was made following a tip-off received by the Police stating that an arms cache was being maintained in the guise of a bottle manufacturing plant in Wewelathenna, SI Herath added. The Police suspect that the cache was maintained by the two suspects as a "retail centre" for arms where arms could be purchased by underworld gangsters. |
