The Social Scientists Association in collaboration with Bradford University in the United Kingdom has launched a special programme to provide peace education to Sri Lankans. The program will offer part-time studies in Conflict Resolution and Peace Preparedness free of charge at two centres, Vavuniya and Matara where the lecture rooms have been donated by the UNHCR and a local NGO INDECOS (Matara). "The choice of these districts reflects the relationship between the conflicts that have plagued Sri Lanka over the past two decades - the war in the North and the insurgencies in the South. Both these regions have distinct, yet inter-related problems," Director of the Peace Studies Program Simon Harris said in a press release. The diploma is funded by the British government and administered through the Social Scientists Association, a research institute founded in 1977. The course content is designed by local lecturers and reflects the complexity of issues found in the Sri Lankan peace process. |
