A special meeting chaired by the Minister of Housing and Plantations Arumugam Thondaman, with the participation of Chairmen, Deputy Chairmen and General Managers of Institutions under the Ministry was held yesterday at 4.30 p.m. in the Ministry auditorium for the purpose of providing immediate relief to flood victims of the Ratnapura and Deniyaya areas. This discussion took place subsequent to the visit by Minister Arumugam Thondaman to the flood affected areas on May 20. Accordingly, a committee comprising six district officials of the National Housing Development Authority was appointed with the aim of conducting a survey of the houses damaged in areas affected by the floods. The Committee is due to submit a survey report immediately with regard to houses destroyed by floods. This committee began functioning yesterday. As a solution to the acute drinking water problem existing in the flood affected regions, a decision was made to supply drinking water by bowsers of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board. Two lorry loads of dry rations, and medicine etc. collected from the employees of the Ministry and the institutions under its purview are due to reach the affected areas within the next 24 hours, states a press release issued by the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure. |
