Responding to the urgent and critical situation caused by flash floods, Oxfam (GB) is targeting non-food relief items assistance for 5,000 families in the Ratnapura District. This is being done through provision of family packs consisting of towels, sarongs, chintz cloth, soap, candles, matches, sanitary napkins, water buckets, and mats. This immediate assistance, with financial support from the British High Commission, amounts to Rupees 11 million. Oxfam will also send a water engineer and technician to Ratnapura District on Thursday, May 22 to investigate needs and look at ways Oxfam can complement government efforts in the water and sanitation areas. "We are very concerned about what we understand to be a serious and potentially very dangerous situation regarding access to clean drinking water", said Phil Esmonde, Oxfam Programme Representative in Sri Lanka. Oxfam GB opened its first office in Sri Lanka in 1986 in order to provide direct assistance to those affected by conflict and natural disasters. |
