by Colvin L. De Silva, Our London correspondent Kshenuka Seneviratne, Acting High Commissioner in the Sri Lanka Mission in London has launched an urgent appeal for relief and assistance to flood and landslide victims in Sri Lanka following the floods due to torrential rain in Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, Hambantota and Kalutara Districts recently. Following an SOS issued by the Foreign Ministry in Colombo, Seneviratne lost no time in launching the appeals for humanitarian assistance from the Sri Lankan expatriate community and other agencies for immediate assistance. According to the Acting High Commissioner, this is one of the worst calamities Sri Lanka has had to deal with in the last ten years and each and every Sri Lankan should rally round to contribute whatever they can to alleviate the suffering of those severely affected by flood waters. In an appeal addressed to the Sri Lankan community, the items identified for immediate despatch to Sri Lanka include rice, pulses, sugar, canned fish, biscuits, roofing sheets, tents, kitchen utensils, buckets, milk powder, infant foods, plates and mugs. Talking to the Daily News Acting High Commissioner Seneviratne said that the British pledged $ 200,000 - as humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka and our expatriate community has responded magnanimously to support the High Commission in their task to provide quick relief to those affected back in Sri Lanka. While SriLankan Airlines and the Sri Lanka Shipping Corporation has agreed to carry any cargoes on a gratis basis to Colombo, Seneviratne is of the views that cash contributions will be the easiest to handle and they could be put to immediate use. Many Sri Lankans who organised a Vesak Day Bana said that they would contribute to this worthy cause generously. |
