Business chambers to support 'Tharuna Aruna'

by Ananda Kannangara

The Employment and Labour Ministry on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with four leading chambers of commerce in order to expedite the granting of employment opportunities to unemployed graduates under its "Tharuna Aruna" job placement scheme.

The Lanka Chamber of Commerce, The Sri Lanka Chamber and Industrial Federation, The Sri Lanka National Chamber of Commerce and the Lanka Industrial Chamber of Commerce are the four institutions.

Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe implemented this World Bank assisted "Tharuna Aruna" training programme on May 1 to coincide with the International Labour Day.

It is reported that 25,800 unemployed graduates who have already registered with the Employment and Labour Ministry will be given training in respective job categories in batches according to their qualifications and other abilities.

"We have already selected 10,000 unemployed graduates from various parts of the country for the training programme," Employment and Labour Minister Samarasinghe said.

He said that providing jobs to unemployed graduates has been a long felt need and the Government has undertaken this task to provide them with suitable jobs within the next two years.

"Under this job placement scheme which was approved by Parliament, unemployed graduates will be given 12 months comprehensive job training with the help of private sector institutions," he said.

Samarasinghe also said that during the training period each graduate will be paid a grant of Rs. 4,000 through the Tharuna Aruna Fund established at the Labour Ministry.

"Thereafter, trained graduates will be absorbed to the same institution they underwent training or any other place here or abroad," he said.

Samarasinghe also said that about 595 private sector companies and business enterprises have already pledged their consent to provide training to the selected graduates. In addition some institutions conduct special English courses and computer courses.
