CMC warns against dumping garbage on roads

by Tharika Goonathilake

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has warned people against dumping garbage on the road with severe fines being imposed on culprits.

The tough stance, has already resulted in legal action being taken against 23 individuals and two companies.

According to CMC Director ( Solid Waste Management Division) Lalith Wickremaratne, the fines are aimed at deterring individuals and even establishments who continue to impede efforts to keep Colombo clean.

"We have taken consorted efforts to collect and dispose garbage on a daily basis, with some of the collection trucks doing the rounds twice a day in certain areas. In addition, we have installed bins in most of the neighbourhoods with plans to expand the bin network. However, these individuals hamper the CMC work," Wickremaratne said.

The CMC, which is making use of the mechanised cleaning procedures for the Fort area- a popular method in other developed cities aims at extending the process to Kollupitiya, Bambalapitya, Wellawatte and subsequently to other areas.

The machines, considered cost effective and known for their methodical sweep, has led to a certain face-lift, however these measures will be of no avail if garbage is dumped on an impromptu basis, he said.

"There has been a large hue and cry over the garbage issue, but people must cooperate to make clean streets and roads a reality in Colombo," the Director said, adding that the 'fine system' will help to deter those who continuously dump garbage on the roads.

Recycling programs covering a four year span is also on the cards with 500 households in the City already joining the programme.

"We have been able to streamline garbage collection and disposable procedures to a great extent with private sector collaboration. However, the public has to cooperate to make this project a success," he said.
