Quick PNB action saves the day

by Panduka Senanayake

A Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) Officer whose timely action led to the success of a recent 'Sting' operation has been nominated for a reward and commendations along with other officers who participated.

According to PNB Director SSP Pujith Jayasundara, the 'Sting' operation, where undercover police operatives were trying to get at some underworld dealers, nearly fell apart when a member of the gang pulled out a pistol and pressed it against the jaw of a police inspector who was leading the operation.

With the cold steel of an automatic pistol pressed against his jaw, the officer had no option but to hand over Rs.20 million, which had been brought to pay off for 10 kilos of heroin, which the gang was to hand over to the undercover men and the van which he was driving.

It was at this crucial time with certain death staring him in the face that the officer's quick thinking and training paid off . Bending down, from the drivers seat to pick up the brief case containing the cash, the officer, in one swift movement had pulled out his service weapon while smashing open the door against the thug who was outside the vehicle.

Thrown off balance, the gangster had fired but the shot had whistled harmlessly into the air. In an ensuing firefight two gang members were wounded. With the arrival of reinforcements the PNB men had rounded up five members of the gang and recovered a pistol, a hand grenade and a kilo of heroin. According to Director Jayasundera, the gang had apparently planned a double cross and intended to rob the money from the operatives. The heroin they had brought for the sale was also sub-standard.

When the case was taken to courts on Monday, supporters of the men who arrived in about 50 trishaws had packed the court house in the hope of obtaining bail for the group.
