by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi and Loku Bandara Munasinghe The World Health Organisation (WHO) has agreed to provide all essential drugs and other medical aid immediately to Sri Lanka, to assist the people affected by flood. This follows a special discussion Health, Nutrition and Welfare Minister P. Dayaratne had with the WHO's Director General Dr. Harlem Brootland. Minister Dayaratne is currently in Geneva attending the 56th session of the WHO. Following the discussion, WHO's Director General has issued necessary instructions to the relevant officers of the organisation in this regard. A Health Ministry spokesman said that the Ministry has already prepared an action plan on essential medical aid urgently required and forwarded it to the Resident Representative of the WHO. The spokesman said the Ministry appreciates the assistance extended by WHO for the alleviation of difficulties and sufferings experienced by the people of Sri Lanka at this crisis hour. Meanwhile, around 200,000 schoolchildren have been affected so far due to floods, Ministry of Home Affairs said yesterday. A Ministry spokesman said steps have already been taken to provide necessary school uniform, equipment to those affected children in Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, Hambantota and Kalutara districts. "These school equipment were distributed through the Divisional Secretaries in the respective areas." he added. |
