SYDNEY, Wednesday (AFP) Australia pledged 100,000 Australian dollars (65,000 US) cash Wednesday to help Sri Lanka cope with its worst floods in five decades and said it would commit more once the extent of the damage became clear. The floods have so far killed 242 people and Australia has said it will help in the clean-up operation. "The funding will go to the Sri Lankan Red Cross for food, medical supplies, clean drinking water and tents," Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Chris Gallus said in a statement. She said further assistance would be considered when more was known about the extent of the tragedy, which has left 180,000 families homeless. |
