Caches of ammunition detected in river bed : Security tightened around Lunu Oya by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Security was tightened yesterday around the Lunu Oya in Chilaw following several detections of ammunition caches concealed in the river bed of the Lunu Oya, Chilaw Police said.Nearly 10,000 ammunition rounds were detected on monday and yesterday . "We found over 1000 live T56 bullets along with 2250 MPMG bullets (used for machine guns) and two anti-aircraft bullets scattered around the Lunu Oya river bed", Chilaw ASP Roshan Fernando told the Daily News yesterday. The Police also found several "blanks " which produces only the sound , and are mostly used by the Army for training purposes, ASP added. Although the ammunition cache was suspected to be over one year old, the stock was proven to "be live" when it was fired "the ASP said. The two grenades found on Monday was handed over to Army Bomb Disposal Squad yesterday. The detection was made following a tip-off received by SI Somapala Katugampola of the Chilaw Police. According to the ASP, mobile Police squads have been deployed in and around the Lunu Oya to ensure that every single bullet was taken into Police custody. Progress in the investigation was slow yesterday as Police officers found it difficult cope with the rising water levels of the Lunu Oya in the absence of professional divers. |
