South Korean parliamentarian here

You-Chul Won, a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea will arrive in Sri Lanka on May 20 to hold discussions on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Won is expected to hold talks with several Cabinet Ministers and senior officials regarding financial and technical assistance to enhance the Information Technology Industry in Sri Lanka.

Won is also expected to explore the possibility of providing employment opportunities in Korea to Sri Lankan youth and also set up a Technical Training Centre in Colombo for the purpose of training migrant workers.

He also intends to initiate a Sri Lanka-Korea Parliamentarian Friendship Association whilst in Colombo and to arrange a Korean investor forum in the near future.

Coordinating unit for flood relief

The Disaster Management and Relief Office operating under the Prime Minister's Office requests all organisations arranging relief facilities for flood victims to contact their office at Flower Road, Colombo on Telephone Numbers 372444 to 50 or on Fax No.372451 before departure for relief distribution. This will ensure an equitable distribution of relief measures, states a media communique issued in this connection.

The office has also informed the District Secretaries to furnish immediately, particulars relating to the loss of life and damage to property as well as relief goods needed by the flood victims.

Four drown in Ratnapura stream, two injured

Four members of a family from Galtude, Panadura were drowned in Ratnapura on Wednesday. When they fell in to a stream.

The dead are Wasanthi Kumari Dias (36) her eldest daughter Malathi Ranawaka (9) and son Chamith Nalaka Dias.

Her mother Sopiya Ranawaka (67) was also drowned and the body is still missing. Police abandoned search operations due to heavy floods.

The family members had gone to Ratnapura Siripagama to visit a relative's house.

They had gone near a power station at Sapugastenna Estate, where there is a stream.

While they were seated on a concrete slab the water gates had switched on automatically due to lightning.

The family members fell in to the stream and they were dragged away by the heavy overflow of water. Four of them were drowned.

Two escaped with injuries.

The three bodies recovered were taken to the Ratnapura hospital.

Inquests were held and recorded separate verdicts of drowning.

Kothalawalage Lasantha Janaka Alwis (23) of No. 214/A, Arawwala, Pannipitiya is suffering from acute renal disease and doctors at the Sri Jayewardhanapura Hospital have recommended an urgent kidney transplant to save his life.

The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 600,000. Lasantha's parents say they are unable to foot this bill due to their present economic plight and request philanthropists and the public to assist their son's cause by remitting their contributions to account number 100554114851 at the Bank of Ceylon, Maharagama Branch.
