Seven disaster management programmes

by Ananda Kannangara

Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday disclosed the details of seven major disaster management programmes to be implemented for the welfare of all flood victim families in the country.

It is reported that around 18,000 families in the Kalutara District were affected and nearly 800 houses were badly damaged in the floods.

"According to the programme, we are expected to provide a bag of dry rations worth Rs. 1000 to each flood affected family at several villages including Bingiriya, Madurawela, Palindanuwara, Bulathsinghala, Walallawita and Dodangoda in the Kalutara District today (May 21) in addition to other fresh food items including lunch and dinner packets, milk powder and bread, Minister Samarasinghe said.

The Minister also directed the officials to take immediate measures to provide medicine and other health care facilities with the help of area doctors, the Red Cross Society and the Sarvodaya Movement.

Samarasinghe said that he has already made arrangements to get down 18 boats from the Fisheries Ministry to provide a ferry service for the benefit of flood victims and also to transport their household goods and food items, provided by various social service organisations.

Meanwhile, the Minister instructed Kalutara District Divisional Secretary Y. Siriwardana to collect the accurate details of the damages caused and thereafter to provide them with the necessary financial assistance to re-construct their houses.
