The Government Spokesman's Office in a media communique yesterday denied the ongoing rumour that the Government has taken a decision to issue new beer licences for the year 2003. Clarifying the actual position, the communique states that the Government has issued a lesser number of beer licences for this year than the previous year. Last year 34 licences were issued on Tourist Board recommendation while 481 licences were issued to other agencies bringing the total to 515. For the year 2003, 38 licences were issued on Tourist Board recommendation while 444 were issued to other agencies, bringing the total to 482 in all. Accordingly, the licences issued on Tourist Board recommendation this year exceeded only by 4 but the total number of licences issued stood lesser than the previous year, points out the communique. The communique also denied the ongoing rumour that an irregular charge of Rs. 5000 is being levied on each beer licence issued. It points out that the true position was to charge Rs. 5000 for each application, a levy which has to be now refunded on the instructions of the Prime Minister. |
