Technology and IT skills vital for country's development - Minister

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy south group correspondent

The United Nations evaluated a country's progress and development through longevity of its people, literacy and the growth of the Gross National Product.

When these factors are taken into account, Sri Lanka is in the front among the South Asian countries said the Minister of Science and Technology Keheliya Rambukwella. He said so when addressing a workshop on the subject of taking technology to the villages on a national level held at the auditorium of the Ministry of Science and Technology which was attended by the heads of the departments under the Ministry.

Minister Rambukwella said that the progress of these three factors affecting the humans is equivalent to objectives achieved by developed countries or closer to it, as technology is vital for development and progress of a country in the modern world.

"Sri Lanka is still lagging behind in computer literacy although enjoying a literacy rate of 92 per cent. Computer literacy is far behind it. Therefore it is essential that our computer literacy rate should be improved in keeping with out literacy rate and it has been targetted to achieve this objective by the year 2010," he said.

He said that plans have been drawn to provide every village in the island with information technology facilities and the Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Reforms Milinda Moragoda will provide their fullest assistance for this programme.

Every electorate will be provided with an IT centre and exhibitions will be held in every district to educate the people on the importance of learning IT.
