by Rashomi Silva Heavy rains, strong winds and floods experienced in the past few days has caused recurrent power failures and total power blackouts in certain areas in the Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts, the Ceylon Electricity Board announced. The rain, wind and flood had severely damaged the distribution centres, sub stations and power lines in most part of the Southern, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces causing lengthy power failures. "In certain parts of the Galle, Matara and Ratnapura districts we were compelled to disconnect the power supply as a temporary safety measure", a CEB spokesperson said. In Ratnapura, where the flood waters are gradually decreasing the CEB hopes to restore the power supply shortly. However, in certain parts of Galle and Matara districts where floods still persist the CEB is unable to comment when the supply will be restored, he said. "However, we are taking all possible steps to restore the power supply immediately in hospitals and water supply stations", he added. Meanwhile, the Water Supply and Drainage Board said the water supply in some areas in Galle and Matara were disturbed as the water storage tanks were submerged in floods. The Colombo Municipal Council said that more than ten street lamps in Colombo metropolitan area were damaged due to falling of trees and the strong wind and the CMC and CEB has now successfully restored the street lamps and the connections. |
