Disaster Communication Unit at Media Ministry The Mass Communication Ministry has set up a Disaster Communication Unit (DCU) to implement an effective communications method for flood victims and minimise the damages caused by floods. The DCU was established on May 19 under the patronage of Ministry Secretary Kumar Abeysinghe. The unit will be operated through the media with the coordination of the Information Department. All media institutions will telecast a special news bulletin at every hour on flood information. The objective of this programme is to gather information to provide immediate relief measures to the people in flood affected areas, a press release issued by the Information Department said yesterday. According to Abeysinghe, it is important that all the media should act with a common goal to implement this programme. In addition, this programme will create an effective coordination with Ministries and institutions by facilitating the implementation of disaster activities in a more efficient manner. The release said the information gathered on public needs will be directly forwarded to the relevant institutions by this unit. The unit will also educate the public on the places which have been set up to provide shelter and medical facilities to the flood victims. The Information Department requests the public to provide information on national disasters to the following numbers. Telephone 512751, and fax number 514753.
