by Chamitha Kuruppu Shell will reduce prices by Rs.70 a cylinder by this weekend followed by another reduction in early June, said Shell Gas Lanka Limited Chairman Roberto Moran at a news conference yesterday. A Shell domestic cylinder is now priced at Rs. 668 and will be Rs. 598 before the June reduction. The company will also refund Rs.1400 on the return of cylinders during the next six months, enabling consumers to choose their suppliers. However, asked whether the company will allow other companies to refill Shell cylinders, Moran refused to comment due to legal implications. Moran said that Shell has come to an out-of-court settlement with the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs following discussions with the Fair Trading Commission and the case has been withdrawn. Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake told the media that the Government will take further measures to protect consumers. "The intention of the government is to protect consumers at all times," he said, stressing that it was the Government which formulated policies in sharp contrast to the general belief that multinational companies called the shots in setting national policies. "Though we have come to a settlement the battle between Shell and the Government will continue but in an amicable way," Karunanayake said. He assured that companies will be encouraged to perform better with an improved business climate while also giving priority to consumer rights. |
