LTTE organises relief programme for flood victims

In an unprecedented gesture signifying goodwill and reconciliation the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has come forward to organise flood relief to the affected victims in the South. Most of the dry rations and similar items are to be collected from the North East population. The LTTE has also enlisted the support of other Tamil social organisations in their effort to muster flood relief and has indicated its decision to supply dry rations, food items and other assistance that are deemed necessary to the flood ravaged areas in Ratnapura,Kalutara,Matara and Hambantota.

The relief consignments are due to leave Vavuniya to Colombo today (May 21), Chairman of Saumya Youth Foundation (SYF) and the Organiser of the North-South Peace Exchange Programme P.Anthonymutoo told the Daily News yesterday. This is the first time that the LTTE had taken any measures to provide assistance of any kind to the people of the South, he said.

The LTTE conveyed their decision to send relief assistance to the flood victims during a meeting they he had with the LTTE Political Wing Leader ( Vavuniya District) C. Ellilan, Anthonymutoo said. On the directions of the LTTE, dry rations and other essential consumer items have been mainly collected from the Tamil people in Mannar, Kilinochchi and Jaffna. In addition, various NGOs operating in the North have also assisted the LTTE for this purpose, he said.

This would be a symbolic gesture of the goodwill extended by the LTTE towards the people of South,he said.

Meanwhile the 96th Inter Religious Peace Meditation Programme (IRPMP) organised by the SYF with the intention of bring lasting peace to the country will also be held at Sri Murugan Hindu Temple, Ginthupitiya, Colombo at 10.00 am today (May 21). IGP T.E.Anandarajah will be the Chief Guest. Ven.Madampagama Assaji thera and other religious dignitaries will participate into this ceremony.

The students and SYF peace group will also attend the function. At this meditation programme, special religious services will be offered to invoke blessings on those who died as a result of the floods in the South. The next stage of this peace meditation programme will be held at Kilinochchi on June 1 with the participation of the LTTE and the Government Officials, he said.
