Giant aviation fuel complex in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka joins the list of countries providing 'A' grade aviation of fuel with a giant aviation fuel complex to be opened shortly at the Katunayake Air Port, states a press release from the Office of the Government spokesman.

This major project initiated by the new government when it came into power was given prominence in its development programme, has enabled Sri Lanka to enter the international aviation fuel market in a big way.

Rs. 900 million have been invested in the new aviation fuel complex which will have state-of-the-art facilities. With this Sri Lanka will join the countries providing 'A' grade aviation fuel.

The new complex enables aviation fuel to be stored for 9 days while earlier aviation fuel could be stored only for three days. 3 new tanks of aviation fuel will be added to the present storage capacity.

With leading airlines willing to buy aviation fuel from Sri Lanka, several sectors are expected to benefit.

WFP Regional Director visits Sri Lanka

The newly appointed Asia Regional Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Tony Banbury, has arrived for a five-day visit to Sri Lanka from 12 to 17 May 2003.

The objective of his visit is to familiarise himself with the ongoing WFP-assisted projects in Sri Lanka and to look for new areas where WFP could provide assistance given the advancements made in the peace process. During his stay Banbury will visit project sites outside of Colombo for two days and will meet key government officials involved in the implementation of WFP - assisted projects WFP staff and other partners.

He will also meet with the Multilateral Group, composed of UN agencies and the international financial institutions residents in Sri Lanka, who recently completed the assessment of rehabilitation and reconstruction needs in the North East.

"Hemas Vesak Kalapaya 2003"

The Hemas Group as a corporate entity celebrated 'Vesak' this year on a grand scale in response to the Government's wish to elevate Vesak to the status of a 'national festival' and also to foster unity, peace and harmony among fellow Sri Lankans.

Staff from all races and religions showed great enthusiasm and joined hands to present the first ever "Hemas Vesak Kalapaya", a grand Vesak celebration which took place at 'Hemas House', Braybrooke Place on Monday May 12. The whole idea of a 'Vesak Kalapaya' originated from the staff and was in turn, endorsed by the board of directors of Hemas Holdings.

The programme commenced with the lighting of the main 'Vesak' lantern at 'Hemas House' by the Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thera (Podi Hamuduruwo), followed by a short discourse.

Members of the Hemas staff, many of them from different ethnic backgrounds and religious denominations, then presented a 'Bhakti Gee' recital. They were all professionally trained for this purpose.This was followed by a Vesak Lantern Competition along Braybrooke Place with participation by the different sectors within the Hemas Group. The judges at the lantern competition were Chairman/Managing Director, Freudenberg & Co. Devinda Senanayake, Managing Director, Ceylon Theatres, A Anthony Page and Mrs. Zarina Moosajee.

The twelve lanterns (kudus), each of them measuring upto 8'x 6' were all made by the Hemas staff and are displayed for public viewing along Braybrooke Place until Saturday May 17, states a Hemas Group press release.

Vesak programme of the Mahaweli Centre

For the second time in its history, the Mahaweli Centre, has organised a Vesak devotional song recital. Men and women employed at the Mahaweli Centre, form the group reciting the devotional songs. The Devotional Song Recital will start at 7.00 p.m. on May 16 at the premises of the Mahaweli Centre. A 'Dansala' (open house) will also be held on the same night, May 16 at the premises of the Mahaweli Centre. Arrangements have been made to provide a high quality dinner at this Dansala, for about 5,000 devotees.

The Vesak programme at the Mahaweli Centre, is being organised under the direction and patronage of Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Minister, Irrigation and Water Management. The overall supervision of the Mahaweli Vesak programme, is by Samson Kumarage, Director, Mahaweli Centre, states a centre press release.
