Improvement in weather pattern predicted

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya and Ratnapura District Corr.

The Met Department yesterday forecast an improvement in the present weather pattern for the next few days with the cyclonic conditions in the Bay of Bengal drifting towards the Indian coast.

A senior official of the meteorological Department yesterday told the Daily News that the impact of the cyclone was gradually decreasing. "Although the North Western monsoons had commenced, there will only be occasional showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces, especially during the afternoons", the official further said.

Meanwhile, an AFP report yesterday stated that the cyclone was moving towards the Indian coast and the Director of Hyderabad meteorological Centre, C.V.V. Bhadram had warned the Indian fishermen against going out to sea.

Heavy rains accompanied by cyclonic winds that ripped through the Western slopes of the Central hills during past few days claimed two more lives from Nivitigala and Eheliyagoda, raising the death toll to seven by yesterday.

Thousands of families from the Matugama, Kalutara, Colombo, Ratnapura, and Galle districts who were rendered homeless have been allocated Rs. 2.45 million by Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera.
