Sub-Regional Family Support Group network seminar/workshop

Colombo plan Drug Advisory Programme (DAP) organized a four-day workshop/seminar for drug addict rehabilitation counsellors, trainers and parent group leaders in the sub-region on "family support groups" at the World Trade Center, Colombo, from May 05th-08th. International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau of the United States sponsored this workshop/seminar. 32 invited delegates from India, Maldives and Sri Lanka participated.

The event was opened by Colombo Plan secretary general Dr. U. Sarath Chandran. Among the distinguished guests at the opening were Ven. Kuppiyawatte Bodananda Thera, director of Mithuru Mithuro Movement, Chris Long, political officer U.S. embassy, Harsha Soyza, additional secretary, Ministry of Social Services, Prof. Ravindra Fernando, chairman, National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and Tay Bian How, director DAP.

Dr. Sarath Chandran in his speech congratulated DAP for the extensive and broad spectrum of services provided against drug abuse. Tay Bian How presented through a series of visuals, their activities towards drug abuse prevention and drug demand reduction during their 30-year history.

Colombo Plan, on a great mission to create a drug free world, through their motto "planning prosperity together", had invited some of the best resource persons in the field, such as Dr. Shanthi Ranganadan, Ms. Tapasi, Ms. Thirumagal from India and DAPs own Tay Bian How, to conduct the workshop/seminar, some of the subjects that were concentrated on were "relapse prevention", "family role", "building of relationships", "habits of effective families" and "development of family support groups".

Mithuru Mithuro Movement, which has one of the best drug rehabilitation programmes in South Asia was selected for the field trip for the delegates to observe and interact with.
