Mother and daughter grab women's title

Ruwantha Hewage and Neraj Wickremasinghe put up a splendid performance to clinch the men's open title at the Jaic Hilton Doubles Tennis Gala 2003 concluded at the Jaic Hilton Towers yesterday.

Hewage and Wickremasinghe combined effectively and beat the combination of Shashivaran Sabanathan and Timothy Rajapakse in an exciting four setter 7-2, 5-7, 7-4, 7-0. In fact the winners completely dominated the final set and really made amends for losing the second set.

The winners received the Sunday Observer Trophies a cash award of Rs. 10,000 and two mobile phones from Mobitel worth Rs. 11,000. The runners up received two hampers worth Rs. 2500 each from Majestic City and two dinner vouchers to the value of Rs. 2000 each from the Hilton Jaic Tower.

Meanwhile the mother and daughter combination of Y. Inouve and A. Inouve won the women's doubles title defeating T. Abeysinghe and L. Goonawardena in straight sets 7-5, 7-5, 7-3. The winners received the Daily News Trophies and 2 X 1 night stays, DBL occupancy at the Hilton Jaic Tower on half board basis. The runners up received two gift packs worth Rs. 2500 each from Oriflame and two dinner vouchers to the value of Rs. 2000 each from Hilton Jaic Tower.

V. T. Sundaralingam and T. Katherine clinched the mixed doubles title with a marathon 4-7, 7-4, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 win over Ganesh and T. Andriea in the final encounter. The winners of this event received two trophies and 2 X 1 night stays DBL occupancy at the Hilton Jaic Tower on half board basis. The runners up received two dinner vouchers for two from the Hilton Jaic Tower to the value of Rs. 3000 each.

In the boys under 16 tournament final Rukmal Cooray and Emmash Sudusinghe had the better of Sanka Atukorale and Kavinda Nagodawithana in another gruelling five setter 6-8, 7-5, 4-7, 7-2, 8-6. The winners received two trophies and two savings accounts from Commercial Bank each worth Rs. 2500. The runners up also received two trophies and two gift packs from Thai Airways worth Rs. 2000 each.

Earlier in the girls under 16 final Thumi Abeysinghe and Lakmali Goonawardena beat Dinali de Silva and Hashini Jayatilleke 7-5, 7-2, 7-5.
