Women's World Cup postponed to March 2005

The Women's World Cup scheduled for December 2004 has been postponed for March 2005 according to a release from the International Women's Cricket Council

.Already the match schedules have been drawn ahead of time with reservation for the bottom two slots that will emerge from the IWCC Trophy Tournament to be played in Netherlands in July this year.

Sri Lanka meets England in day two of the tour. The six finalists are England, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Australia and Sri Lanka. There are about seven countries who failed to qualify at the 2000 finals who will battle it out for the positions of the two remaining finalists.

The President of the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lankan, Gwen Herat is almost sure that West Indies and Netherlands will make it to the finals. There can be upsets for instance Japan is making a foray into international cricket.

"Upsets are many", said Herat who is confident Sri Lanka will make it to the finals if not semis when the tournament for the most prestigious World Cup for women begins. 'Our girls need motivation and more international exposure. They just beat the West Indies 6-0 which is the same result experienced by the Pakistan team who were here last year. However new blood is needed and I think taller girls will have the advantage especially at fielding, an area we have to improve," said a confident Herat.

She hopes to arrange a triangular series next year when she meets the delegates of the IWCC in Netherlands. Herat is very keen to get India who beat Sri Lanka to take the fifth slot in the WC Tour of 2000 in New Zealand. "They are a formidable team and very aggressive too and our girls will stand to benefit and gain experience if matched against them. I will not be surprised if India wins the World Cup. New Zealand and Australia keep winning all the time and the results are a little monotonous. It is high time for Asia to clinch it and hope India will upset, if not Sri Lanka'", Herat further said.

The Karnataka State team from India is due in June this year and six 50 limited over matches will be played at club level with the intention of exposing more and more girls the international experiences.

The next World Cup 2005 will have the ICC greatly involved with the IWCC, according to Herat.
