Presidential Secretary retires

W. J. S. Karunaratne, Additional Secretary to the President has been appointed Acting Secretary to the President following the retirement of Kusumsiri Balapatabendi, who is on leave with effect from April 30 prior to his retirement, a press release said.

Balapatabendi, a leading civil lawyer and President's Counsel, retires on medical advice after serving nearly nine years, both as Secretary to the Prime Minister and then Secretary to the President, Presidential Secretariat said.

Former MP dead

Former Galle District MP and Ratgama Chief UNP organizer, Sarath Gunawardena (54) expired on last Saturday (3) at the Karapitiya General Hospital. A father of four, he functioned as a Cabinet consultant to the present government on health and nutrition.

His funeral will take place at Hikkaduwa public cemetery on Thursday.
