From N.U. Abdul Razzak in Male Sri Lankan expatriate workers of the Sinhala and Tamil communities in the Maldives marked the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day with much enthusiasm under the patronage of the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka for the Maldives Zarrok A. Samsudeen on Friday, April 25. the celebrations were held at Iskandar School in Male. Twenty one events including Kottapora, cadjan weaving, tug of war, and kana muttiy bindima were held. The festivities started with the hoisting of the National Elag of Sri Lanka by the Chief Guest - the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Z.A. Samsudeen. The welcome speech was delivered by the labour counsellor of the Sri Lankan High Commission Amal Wickramathunga. The country manager of the Bank of Ceylon B.H. Dole, the principal of Ameeniyya School Mrs. M.K. Velikala, the Director of Sri Lanka Trade Centre Inthilaam Sufiyaan, the country manager of the Insurance Corporation T.B. Amaradasa and the Head of the Chancery of the Sri Lankan High Commission. K. Noon were the special invitees. The festivities were organized by the Sri Lankan High Commission in the Maldives with the sponsorship of the Bank of Ceylon, Male' Branch. |
