Investment, Russian tourists will visit with peace in Lanka - Ambassador

The Russian Ambassador in Sri Lanka Mikhail Karpov told a gathering at the Victoria Park here that with the peace in Sri Lanka, he would foresee large number of Russians visiting this country, in addition to embarking on investments. He said Nuwara Eliya being the country's national Tourist Centre, the tourists will visit this beautiful city. The Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Attal Malhotra, said mother nature endowed with the ideal climatic conditions of Nuwara Eliya, the beautiful flowers were synonymous with humanity all over the world, and more particularly with his country and Sri Lanka the flowers were patronised till birth to the last journey.

The Indian Envoy said he had been a frequent visitor to this charming city of Nuwara Eliya, and its beauty and charm had always been in his mind. He also congratulated the local authorities for the vast developments undertaken recently for the benefit of the exodus of holiday crowds during this festive season.

The two foreign diplomats were the chief guests at the Nuwara Eliya's traditional and historical Flower Exhibition on two consecutive days held at the Victoria Park here. The Chief Minister W. P. B. M. Dissanayake, who declared open the flower exhibition on the first day said with all the developments of Nuwara Eliya city, he was taken a back. He said if the Britishers had remained in the country Nuwara Eliya should have been a much better place to live because they protected the forests, the lakes, the streams. But presently they have been ruined.

He said as a child he had watched, the fishes and trouts dancing in the Nanuoya ela. Today the Nanuoya ela is totally ruined.

He called upon the citizens to protect Nuwara Eliya, and assured he would provide monetary assistance in this regard.

Deputy Minister for the plantation industry and member of parliament for Nuwara Eliya district Navin Dissanayake, congratulated the Festivities Committee of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, and said there had been a remarkable strides of development work have been undertaken, and he along with the Mayor requested each of the business centres within the city to paint their shops and upkeep the entire city clean and tidy. If they fail, he said their water will be cut. He hopes as an MP of the area to make the entire city more beautiful for the benefit of the residents and the holiday crowds. Mayor Chandana Karunaratne, said unlike in the past years, his council as a team work had done the best for the city and the holiday crowds who flocked in its thousands. The April Bloom 2003, attracted nearly five hundreds competitors together with commercial establishments, including the Banks - the overall champion of the show in the private section was Mrs. Anula Wickremasinghe, and in the commercial section the 112 year old Grand Hotel won the challenge trophy.
