President informs govt. to provide relief to 8000 displaced in Muttur

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has informed the Government to provide immediate relief measures to 8000 people displaced as a result of the Muttur incident.

PA Media Spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunugama told the PA weekly media briefing on Friday that the President had called a meeting with Defence Minister Tilak Marapana and the service chiefs this week to discuss on the Muttur incident and the ongoing situation in the East.

The Party organisers of the PA and the NUA in the Eastern province also attended the discussion.

At this discussion, President instructed the IGP to set up several new Police units and commence Police patrols in Trincomalee to protect the people in the area.

It is the responsibility of the Government to ensure the security in these areas, he said.
