New proposals to cut down delays in soccer tourneys

by Bernard Perera

Representatives from thirteen leading clubs playing in the Premier League met last Saturday to find solutions to minimise the time period for the tournament which causes financial and other difficulties for clubs participating.

The meeting which was convened by Ranjith Rodrigo, Treasurer and President of Negombo Youth SC discussed many problems faced during this tourney. The only club that failed to forward a representative was the Jupiters SC from Negombo.

These representatives had a lengthy discussion to find ways to cut down the long period which takes over nine months to complete the tourney.

All of them were of the view that this factor has brought most of the clubs to face many financial difficulties as well as many hardships to players as they fail to attend to personal and other problems.

As such a proposal was brought forward to play most of the matches at Sugathadasa Stadium, which could solve the problem of ground facilities.

At least four matches to be played on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this could definitely reduce the time period. If this practice is accepted they are of the view that the championship which commences in September could see the end in nearly four months.

The discussions also centred on postponements, sponsorship and Referee's responsibility.

At this meeting it was decided to forward all decisions taken by the committee to the Football Federation of Sri Lanka for its perusal and implementation.

A committee of 14 members representing all Premier League Clubs will meet shortly to do a deep study on these proposals before handing over same to FFSL. Ranjith Rodrigo will head the committee while he receives the support from Desmond Joseph who serves as the Secretary.

The committee includes the following R. A. Dayapala (Air Force), P. A. R. Samarakoon (SL Army), A. R. M. Fazul (Blue Star), M. Premadasa (Java Lane), Com. A. Pieris (Navy), D. Chandrasiri (Old Bens), B. Anthony (Pettah United) Herley Silveira (Ratnam), R. Fernando (Renown), P. D. Sirisena (Saunders), Z. Zainnabdeen (Victory), Gamini Randeni (Police).
