LTTE Eastern command recommends to hand over extorted agricultural lands

by Rashomi Silva

The LTTE Eastern command has recommended to its hierarchy to hand over the agricultural lands they extorted from the Muslims in the East, the SLMM sources said yesterday.

The LTTE Eastern leadership has made this recommendation following a discussion held with a Muslim delegation in the Vavunathivu Divisional Secretariat last Friday.

The discussion was chaired by Troels Jakobsen, the SLMM Batticaloa district chief. The Muslim delegation was led by Basheer Segudawood the Deputy Minister of Housing and the LTTE team was led by T. Ramesh, special commander of Batticaloa and Ampara.

This meeting was scheduled to be held early last month, but due to unavoidable circumstances it was postponed, SLMM spokesperson Pekka Vihervas said.

The SLMM described the talks as frank, cordial and open and said both parties discussed ways and means to harmonise the interests of the Tamil and Muslim communities.

"The parties expressed their views quite freely in clearing the misunderstandings between the two communities and to resolve the problems under the chairmanship of the SLMM," the spokesperson said.

"The parties have agreed to host regular meetings to foster relationship between them," he added.
