CID nabs 21 illegal migrants

A group of 21 Pakistanis, who planned to migrate to Italy illegally in fishing trawlers were arrested yesterday by the CID at Armour Street, Colombo. The group were taken into custody while staying at a restaurant.

According to CID SSP D.S.Y. Samarathunge, the arrests were made on a tip-off that the group had been occupying the restaurant/hotel from January.

"They did not have valid visas," SSP Samarathunge said. Two of them did not even have passports. The SSP further said that a Sri Lankan businessman is believed to be behind the racket.

The CID have also taken the restaurant manager into custody for further investigations.

Kapuge injured

Veteran singer Gunadasa Kapuge was admitted to hospital yesterday after a fall at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Sources said Kapuge had fallen while alighting from the flight which arrived from Dubai last morning. He was immediately admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. Hospital sources said he had sustained injuries in the head and spine.

National Vesak Festival

Arrangements have been made to celebrate the National Vesak Festival 2003 on a grand scale this year. The National Committee on the Vesak Festival 2003 has already taken steps to organise several programs to mark the event, Buddhasasana Ministry Secretary N. W. Weralupitiya said.

He said that the committee consist of five sub committees and they are concerned on five different topics, namely, implementing spiritual programs, cultural and aesthetic decorations, sub committee on basic facilities and infrastructure facilities, sub committee on linking local and foreign tourism industry and a media coordinating sub committee.

Some of the highlights of the National Vesak program are the recital of Bhakthi Gee at Torington Square by 500 teachers, the recital of Bhakthi Gee at Galle Face by different groups attached to various institutions and organisations and the program implemented by the Tourist Board, he said.

Private sector expected to follow Govt.sector decision

The decision to extend the retirement age of public servants from 55 years to 57 years taken by the Government sector is expected to be followed by the private sector institutions too, Public Administration, Management and Reforms Minister Vajira Abeyawardena told the Daily News.

The Minister made this observation following inquiries made by officials of private sector institutions during the past several months regarding the retirement age of mercantile sector workers.

Circular No 5/2002 dated August 23, 2002 issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, Management and Reforms has laid down the retirement age of public servants.The Circular also indicates that the services of workers can be extended even after 57 years to 60 years on the recommendations of the respective heads of departments. Abeywardena further said that the Circular has been sent to all Ministry Secretaries, Local Government Chief Secretaries and Heads of all Government Departments.

For philosophy conference

Prof. Daya Edirisinghe Senior Professor of Philosophy, University of Kelaniya left Sri Lanka last week to participate in an International conference on Indian Philosophy Science and Culture at New Delhi, India. Five hundred scholars will participate in this International Conference from all over the world. Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian National Science Academy and International Institute of Philosophy will sponsor this International gathering. Prof. Daya Edirisinghe has published more than twenty books and fifty research articles in English Sinhala and Korean in Sri Lanka and abroad.He is a member of the Indian Philosophical Congress and former Director of Institute of Aesthetic Studies, University Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. At present He is the president of National Child Educational Foundation, New Town Mulleriyawa.

Computer whiz-kid

The most significant and the eye catching event at the annual awards ceremony of The School of Computer Science, Menikhinna was the prowess demonstrated in Computer Technology by a year 3 student Deleepa Deepal Abeyratne studying at Menikhinna Maha Vidyalaya, also a part time student of the Computer Training Institute who dismantled a Pentium 2 Computer into its major components and reassembled it back to its original working condition in the presence of the gathering in the Hall. Deleepa is said to have shown a keen interest in Computer Science from an early age and was introduced into the field when he was a tiny tot of 4 years. Certificates were awarded to 396 students who successfully completed the Training Course of the Institute and 10 others were awarded scholarships for Training at the Institute.
