by Nadira Gunatilleke The Social Welfare Ministry will launch a special programme to re-school drop-outs under the direction of Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Viji Jagarsasingam said. She said that the programme will be implemented through Child Rights Protection Officers (CRPOs) attached to Divisional Secretariat divisions. There are around 260 CRPOs attached to Divisional Secretariats. According to the regulations laid down by the Government in 1997 school education is compulsory for all children between five and 14 and each Divisional Secretariat division should have a compulsory school attendance monitoring committee. However this mechanism was not effectively implemented during the past and the school drop-out rate increased rapidly due to various reasons including poverty. "Now a National Monitoring Committee on Children's Charter has been appointed by the President. We launched this project after discussions with the Education Ministry," she added. The project is funded by UNICEF. The main objective of this programme is schooling all children between the age of five and 14. |
