by Nadira Gunatilleke 'Pavithra Yathra 2003', an environmental cleaning programme organised by the Buddhasasana Ministry and implemented countrywide by Dhamma schoolchildren and schoolchildren will be held from April 7 to 12 under the directive of Buddhasasana, Justice, Law Reform and National Integration Minister W.J.M. Lokubandara. Buddhasasana Ministry Secretary N.W. Weralupitiya said the main intention of this programme is ensuring a clean environment parallel to the New Year and Vesak festivals. Cleaning the environment and households is a tradition in Sri Lanka. The rising amount of garbage is one of the main environmental problems here. Several State and private sector institutions are engaged in environmental projects but public cooperation is vital to implement them effectively, the Ministry said. This is the second time that this programme is being implemented countrywide. This year's programme will start from April 6 with the cleaning of Buddhist temples by Dhamma schoolchildren and will be extended to other institutions and homes. |
