U.S. supports Colombo Plan for drug abuse prevention

The U.S. government has presented US $ 500,000 to the Colombo Plan to facilitate the Plan's "Afghanistan Initiative for Drug Demand Reduction." This was announced by Ambassador E. Ashley Wills, who presented the funds to Dr. U. Sarat Chandran, Secretary General of the Colombo Plan Secretariat.

The Colombo Plan, which is currently on its fifty-third year, was established for the social and economic development of countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The Drug Advisory Programme (DAP) is the Plan's oldest programme, and the United States has been a major donor in the implementation of its initiatives.

In presenting the funds to Dr. Chandran, Ambassador Wills said the Colombo Plan should be commended for taking the initiative to combat the drug menace in the Asia Pacific Region.

He assured Dr. Chandran of the U.S. government's continuing support for DAP. Dr. Chandran expressed his gratitude to the United States government, particularly to the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, for its continued support of DAP initiatives. Yesterday's donation is the largest contribution received by DAP to date, the US Embassy in Colombo said.

The DAP-implemented initiatives would encompass all areas of drug demand reduction in Afghanistan.
