Lahiru and Sukitha going great guns in Melbourne

Lahiru Peiris of St. Peter's College and Sukitha Senaratne of Royal College, currently on a cricket scholarship at Carey Baptist Grammar School, Melbourne have notched match winning scores for the school in all four matches played against other leading schools in Melbourne, Australia.

This valuable scholarship was availed through the untiring efforts of Dr. Quintus De Zylva, a resident in Melbourne, who is also the president of the Cricket Foundation of Victoria and the official representative for the Board of Control of Cricket, Sri Lanka (BCCSL) in Australia.

Whinstone Foenander, the President of Old Preterites Sports Club and other Old Preterites and Dilip Somaratne an Old Royalist also contributed to make the stay in Melbourne for the two of them. The following results and scores indicate the valuable contributions made by Lahiru and Sukitha to the success of Carey Baptist Grammar School in the four matches played so far against leading schools in Melbourne.

Vs. St Kevin's - Carey Grammar won by 116 runs with Sukitha scoring 50 with 8 fours and Lahiru 41 with 7 fours.

Vs Geelong Grammar - Carey Grammar won by 97 runs - Lahiru top scoring with 76 and also took 2 for 8 in 6 overs. Sukitha scored 34 runs. Vs Melbourne Grammar - Carey Grammar won by 43 runs - Sukitha top scoring with 60 runs.

Vs Brighton - Match was drawn due to rain - Lahiru top scored with a brilliant 98 not out with 7 fours.

Lahiru performed excellently as the captain of St. Peter's College under 15 team of 2002 with creditable contributions in key tournament matches.

Suckitha is an under 16 player and was a left hand opening batsman for Royal under 19 second eleven, who has done consistently well for his team with the bat.

The selection for he scholarship was made by former Sri Lanka player Roshan Mahanama through a stiff competition which screened a considerable section of Sri Lankan's Best cricketers of the under 15 and under 16 age groups.

The exposure given to both these young cricketers, by a training programme of this nature will undoubtedly stand in good stead and augurs well for the development of their cricketing abilities and also enhance their personalities and in turn will make a significant contribution to the respective schools and to the country. The experience they gain facing foreign peers on unfamiliar pitches and climatic conditions will go a long way in shaping their cricketing careers.

Sponsors of this scholarship have indeed done a praiseworthy service by providing Lahiru and Sukitha a rare and impressive opportunity as an early build up for a maturing career.
