SLPA chief meets key Assns in shipping sector Sri Lanka Ports Authority(SLPA) Chairman Parakrama Dissanayake yesterday met key associations in the shipping sector including the Ceylon Association of Ships Agents (CASA) and the Sri Lanka Association of Vessel Operators (SLAVO) to discuss issues that would arise as a result of the war in Iraq. Shipping sources told the Daily News that the non-arrival of tankers from Iran and Iraq would handicap shipping activities. Other shipping sector Associations including the Association of Clearing and Forwarding Agents (ACFA) are also planning to meet the Chairman in the next couple of days to discuss remedial measures. The exports sector especially the apparel exporters have expressed fears that a possible war risk surcharge imposed by underwriters would increase their cost on exports. Representatives of the apparel sector also met the SLPA Chairman yesterday. Exporters had to face severe difficulties following the attack on the Katunayake Airport when the underwriters imposed a war risk surcharge on ships calling at the Colombo Port. |
