Retired Norwegian Army General Triggve Tellefsson will assume duties as the new head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission today (7th). He will replace Gen. Trond Furuhovde who headed the Scandinavian truce monitors since the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement February 23 last year. Gen. Tellefsson visited the SLMM offices in the North and the East during the past two weeks since his arrival here and met local security forces and LTTE commanders. He with Gen. Furuhovde intervened to ensure the release of the two servicemen held in LTTE custody. Gen. Furuhovde and Tellefsson yesterday met Defence Minister Tilak Marapana, Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and Army, Air Force and Police Chiefs for lunch where Tellefsson was introduced to the service chiefs and Furuhovde bid farewell. |
