by Ananda Kannangara Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has settled last year, 5771 complaints lodged by domestic and professional Lankan expatriate workers through the Workers' Welfare Fund (WWF), a study carried out by the Bureau said. The complainants received Rs. 4 million as compensation while the actual amount paid to the workers during this period was Rs. 4303600. Approximately 7664 expatriate workers lodged complaints during this period among which 5704 complaints were lodged by women in domestic sector. 1960 complaints were lodged by non-domestic sector workers employed as drivers, labourers, hotel employees and garment factory workers. "We have appointed a special team of officials to take prompt action for the complaints made by our expatriate workers frequently and we resolved 90 per cent of cases within a short period", Chairman, SLBFE Susantha Fernando told the Daily News yesterday. Unresolved 1893 complaints, lodged last year will be considered within the next two months, he said. According to the study the nature of complaints received during this period includes 1451 for physical and mental harassments, 2117 for non- payment of agreed wages, 1512 for breach of contract, 1824 for lack of communication, 13 for sudden deaths, four for sudden loss of employment and other minor complaints. |
