By Asela Kuruluwansa

Two suspects wanted in connection with a spate of robberies in Kandy and suburbs were arrested by officers of the Central Province Special Police Investigation Unit in a raid in Suduhumpola, Kandy yesterday.

The officers also took into custody several gold chains valued at nearly Rs. 150,000 from their possession.

One of the suspects, a drug addict who is only 21-year-old has studied in a leading Kandy school. He had been an award winning boxer during his school days.

The suspects were due to be produced in court yesterday. Inspector M. Farouk and Sub Inspectors Dissanayake, Rafaithu, J. Sirisena and Chintaka Bandara are conducting further investigations directed by Inspector D. Gurusinghe, OIC, Special Investigations Unit. The Revenue Protection Order No. 07/2002, operational from November 7, 2002 covers tariff changes announced in the 2003 Budget. The salient features of the tariff changes are: With a view to granting protection to local farmers, specific duties are imposed on import of onions (Rs. 6/- per kg.), dried onions, green grams (Rs. 5/- per kg)., cowpea, rice flour (Rs. 7 per kg), and sakkara. To protect local industries, tariff lines covering finished electrical goods which were dutiable at 10% now pay an increased import duty of 20%.

Intermediate finished goods (such as aluminium bars, rods and electrical resistors) carry an increased duty from 5% to 10%.

Television receiving sets and solar power apparatus, which were duty free, are liable to a duty of 5%. Twenty three tariff lines have been rearranged in order to avoid anomalies and for easier identification for tariff purposes. As a revenue measure, all tariff lines, which were duty free have been made liable to a duty of 2% excluding crude oil and petroleum products, wheat, pharmaceuticals, textiles, precious metal and stones, seeds and printed books, while adjusting the preferential rate on the basis of different Free Trade Agreements.
