Need to rehabilitate victims of crime - CJ

by Kahawa special correspondent

Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva stressed the need to set up hostels in all regions to accommodate victims of crime in order to bring them back to the social main stream.

He was addressing a meeting held at the Light House Hotel, Galle recently for setting up a Foundation to provide relief to juveniles and elders subjected to crime in the Southern Province.

Representatives of the private sector and several high ranking Police and Judicial Officers in the Southern Province attended the meeting.

The Chief Justice said, "There is an urgency for setting up separate hostels with all facilities to accommodate victims of crime under one roof.

They should have provisions to ensure wholesome food and sports, sanitary and educational facilities to their inmates. Vocational guidance should also be provided at these hostels to enable the innocent victims to re-enter society and lead normal lives."

The Chief Justice said NGOs could be entrusted with the task of running these hostels provided that they are under the constant guidance and supervision of the Police.

He said the Government too had a responsibility to mete out justice to victims of crime and ensure their rights under the human rights law.

High Court-Judge Mrs. Rohini Perera delivered the welcome address.

Constitutional Council member S. S. Wijeratne, Galle District Judge Chandrasena Rajapakse, Chairman Hettigoda Industries Group Deshabandu Victor Hettigoda and Southern Province DIG E. W. Prathapasinghe also spoke.
