by Rashomi Silva A group of Middle Level Technical Officers of Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) have threatened to strike from today if authorities fail to grant what they claim as "long overdue promotions and salary increments". Over 1,000 members from Electrical, Mechanical and Civil superintendent unions will participate in the strike. Nihal Wijesinghe, President of the Federation of Electrical Professionals told the Daily News yesterday adding that five of their members had even volunteered to fast unto death. Middle level technical officers are engaged in electricity generation, transmission, distribution and maintenance. Over 10,000 personnel work under them. While assuring that the strikers will not wilfully destroy state property or sabotage power supplies, he said that they will not take responsibility for breakdowns or system failures that may occur during their absence. "Our aim is to win our long due promotions and salary increments, before the power sector reform and restructuring takes place," Wijesingha added. A promotion scheme approved for middle level technical officers by a Cabinet decision in 1981 was not implemented, Wijesingha said. "Former CEB Chairman A.C. Ariyananda and General Manager D.C. Wijeratne agreed to implement the promotion schemes. However the present management had declined to do so. |
