Lanka - German Investment promotion, Protection deal passed

The Parliament passed with a two third majority as required by Article 157 of the Constitution, the Sri Lanka - Germany Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement as being essential for the development of the national economy of Sri Lanka.

The Agreement was presented in Parliament by Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando on February 19.

The first Bilateral Investment Agreement between Sri Lanka and Germany was signed in 1963. Given significant developments in the international economic sphere, it was considered important for Sri Lanka and Germany, to re-negotiate the 1963 agreement to bring it more in line with current agreements of this nature and to better facilitate investment flows in a dynamic, globalised and international economic environment.

The agreement covers all aspects of the foreign investor - host country relationship such as the grant of protection and fair and equitable treatment to investors and the grant of National and Most-Favoured-Nation treatment.

The conclusion of the Investment Agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany who has been a traditional partner in Europe is an affirmation of the growing international confidence in Sri Lanka's investment climate.
