Vimukthi Jayasundara's short film Vide pour I'amour (Empty for Love) has been selected for this year's International Cannes Film Festival. This is the first time in 20 years that a Sri Lankan is being honoured at the prestigious film festival after Dr. Lester James Peris in 1982. Jayasundera, 26, resides in France. His film has been screened at the Cinematheque Francaise, Paris and at the Fresnoy during the exhibition "Panorama's" in Paris. In recognition of his talent the Jury presided by Francis Girod selected Jayasundera to participate at the residency programme organised by the Cine Foundation, the organising panel to the Cannes Film Festival, which allows six foreign film producers to write a feature film which will be finally screened at Cannes. Jayasundera's first documentary production Land of Silence was screened at the International Festival of Documentary Film in Marseilles in 2002. Jayasundera an old boy of Mahinda College, Galle holds a Diploma from the Film and Television Institute of India. He works at Lefresony Studio Des Art Contemporaries in France. The National Film Corporation has sponsored his studies for one year. |
