Development project in Deraniyagala, Dehiowita

A massive development project has been implemented to uplift the socio-economic conditions of low income families in Deraniyagala and Dehiowita divisional secretariat divisions.

One hundred houses will be constructed at Hambanawela in the Deraniyagala Divisional Secretariat division and 60 houses at Rathnagama in the Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat division under the project launched on a concept of Samurdhi Minister R.A.D. Sirisena.

The National Housing Development Authority will assist to construct the houses while decentralised budget has allocated money to construct roads for these housing schemes, a Samurdhi Ministry spokesman told the 'Daily News'.

He said the National Water Supply and Drainage Board will grant Rs. 12,000 for sanitary facilities of each house to be constructed at Rathnagama under the second stage of the project.

In addition, sirisena has also allocated money to the project from his budgetary allocations.

Meanwhile, an agriculture village is also under construction at Basnagala in the Deraniyagala divisional secretariat division with Chinese Government assistance. Twenty five houses will be constructed at this village and one acre land plot has been reserved for each house, he said.

The Chinese Government will provide Rs. 100,000 grant for each house built in this agriculture village. A community hall, shrine, children's playground, public playground and a cemetery will also be constructed at this village. He said each house of this agriculture village will be provided electricity, drinking water and sanitary facilities free of charge.

Of the one acre land plot reserved for each house, house recipients should grow tea within half an acre. Tea Small Holdings Development Authority will grant loans. The other half of the acre should be used for home garden projects. On the Minister's request, the Asian Development Project has implemented a special project to provide drinking water and sanitary facilities to the needy in Deraniyagala and Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat divisions.

Arrangements have been made to commence this project in 16 Garama Niladari divisions in Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat division and 15 Garama Niladari divisions in Deraniyagala Divisional Secretariat division, he said.
