Donors pledge US $ 25 billion for development projects

by Rashomi Silva

Donor countries have pledged Sri Lanka with U.S. $ 25 billion for the development of the country including the North and East.

Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya said last Thursday at the Annual sessions of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects held at the BMICH.

Minister Jayasuriya said that the democratic world has approved the path of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the government. The trust the world has placed in the government is evident from the large amount of funds the country is favoured with.

"The country has been very generously aided by the donor countries. The steps taken by the government and the Prime Minister are being appreciated and approved by the democratic nations", Jayasuriya said.

The once shattered nation is now going through a difficult period, the government has resolved to make this year a year for construction, rebuilding and a year to go forward.

When U.S. $ 25 billion comes into circulation with new projects such as Hambanthota harbour and the two air ports being implemented, it will alter the course of the country favourably he explained.

The Architects have an immense role to play in helping the government in nation building and reconstruction. "One million houses are needed to give a better quality of life including the plantation sector. Support from the private sector architects are greatly valued in the endeavour", he said.

"It is the aim of the government to give all the people of the country a better quality life and at the same time ensuring good governance, transparency and accountability", the Minister said.
