LTTE abandons protest due to low turnout

by Ranga Jayasuriya

A LTTE organised demonstration at Thirukkovil turned out to be a flop with a low civilian attendance, forcing the Tigers to abandon the protest, security sources said yesterday.

The protesters were to go on procession to the Assistant Government Agent's office to hand over a petition against what the LTTE called Ceasefire Violations by the Security Forces, but the rally was abandoned when it failed to draw enough protesters.

The LTTE in Wednesday afternoon called on the public to gather at the Thirukkovil Maha Vidyalaya from where the rally was to kick off.

"The shops were closed and school turn out was low as civilians remained at homes. They did not want to be taken forcefully to the protest," A special Task Force official told the Daily News.

He said the Police and the STF removed the road blocks placed by LTTE supporters and intervened when the cadres stopped a couple of buses to take passengers to the protest rally.

"They were rescued and public transport was restored," he said.

The protest came a day after the LTTE's failed effort to hold a hartal in the Jaffna peninsula, where the public defied the LTTE call to wear black belts and close shops to protest the Manipay incident, where Tigers and the Security forces clashed over waist belts of LTTE women cadres.
