Govt-LTTE talks on ceasefire violations

by Ranil Wijayapala

Ceasefire violations will be taken up at a meeting between Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and LTTE Eastern Commander Muralidaran alias Karuna in Batticaloa next week. The meeting is arranged by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Chief Trond Furuhovde.

Defence Secretary Fernando told the Daily News yesterday that the SLMM Chief is due to fix an exact date for the meeting within the first three days of next week.

"This is a routine monthly meeting between the two parties to gain a closer understanding. Ceasefire violations will definitely be discussed at this meeting," he added.

General Trond Furuhovde is due to make the agenda for the meeting at the beginning of next week.

There had been a series of ceasefire violations within the last few weeks in the East, including provocative acts, abductions and child conscriptions.

The Defence Secretary also wrote to SLMM Chief regarding LTTE activities where LTTE cadres forcibly took away 10 buses belonging to the Batticaloa depot to transport LTTE members and civilians for one of their meetings.

The Defence Secretary mentioned this incident as a provocative act of the LTTE.

He is due to visit Jaffna this weekend to have a series of discussions regarding resettlement of people in the High Security Zones.
