By Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Police yesterday fired water canons to disperse a large group of JVP protesters who threatened to march onto Temple Trees.

The protest march was halted at Dharmapala Mawatha junction by Police when protestors tried to break through the police barricades.

The protest was called to co-inside with the first anniversary of the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement between the government and the LTTE which falls on Saturday (22nd).

Earlier, the protesters gathered near the Peliyagoda Nawaloka Grounds at around 3.30 pm and walked along Ingurugashandiya, Panchikawattha, Maradana to Lipton Circle and came upto Dharmapala Mawatha at 5.30 p.m.

The JVP supporters which gathered at Dharmapala Mawatha called the ceasefire agreement signed between the Government and the LTTE an "agreement of surrender".

The protesters also accused the government for giving the LTTE international recognition in addition to the Rs. 85 million as an aid in Oslo peace talks.

Several JVP MPs including Anura Dissanayake, Sunil Hadunneti and Bimal Ratnayaka and its general secretary Tylvin Silva were also present.
