House breaking, theft case : Suspect ordered to furnish Rs. 5,000 cash bail

A young suspect in a house breaking and theft case, remanded earlier for not reporting at the police station, was warned and ordered to furnish Rs. 5,000 cash bail by Kandy Magistrate D. L. M. Seneviratne, on Monday.

H. M. R. Herath Pilapitiya of Elagolla, Kandy was arrested by Kandy police in connection with a complaint of house breaking and theft and remanded on February 22 last year.

After two weeks, court released him on bail and directed him to report at the crime branch of Kandy police on the last Sunday of every month.

Recently Pilapitiya was arrested on suspicion by Kandy police and inquiries revealed that he had failed to report at the crime branch of Kandy police for four months.

Sergeant A. B. Weerasekera of Kandy crimes produced Pilapitiya with a 'B' report and informed court that the house breaking and theft case against the suspect is to be called on June 17.


Kidney patient needs help

Welangahawatte Gedara Sunil, 32, of Kalogahaela, seeks public support to get treatment for the disorder of both kidneys.

He is unable to support his wife Egoda Gedara Bisomenike and child Tharuka Nishan Thilakarathne, 6, attending Kalogahaela primary School.

Owing to the illness, he has been bed-ridden for over six months.

South Asia Partnership Sri Lanka has released Rs. 25,000 and built a temporary house for this family. Dr. D.T.A.G. Abeysekera, consultant physician in charge, Nethrology Transplant Unit of the Kandy General Hospital who treated this patient has recommended that he undergoes blood purification and transplant of a kidney.

The cost of the operation and other treatments have been estimated around Rs. 300,000.

Donations can be sent to account number 207-105855-2 at the People's Bank, Dambulla branch.


Police teargas students

Balangoda Police were forced to use tear gas yesterday to quell a student mob who pelted stones at the Police station. The incident was sequel to the arrest of 10 students of the Sabaragamuwa University the previous day.

Two policemen were injured, one of them critically, in the ensuing clash. Several students also sustained injuries. They were admitted to the Balangoda and Ratnapura Hospitals.
